The Shanghai LNG terminal is located at Zhong Ximentang Island, which is part of the Yangshan Shenshui Port District of Shanghai International Shipping Center. The partners are CNOOC Gas & Power (45%) and Shanghai Shenergy Group (55%), which signed an agreement to build the terminal in September 2004 and established the Shanghai LNG Company Limited at the end of February 2005.
The 3 mmtpa Phase I of Shanghai LNG project received its first commissioning cargo from Malaysia LNG (MLNG) in October 2009. Currently, the Shanghai LNG terminal is dedicated to receive LNG cargoes from MLNG. It also has plans to expand its total regasification capacity to 6 mmtpa in Phase II. Gas from the Shanghai LNG terminal is mainly piped to the nearby Shanghai region to ease the natural gas supply shortage and improve the region’s fuel mix structure in the long run.
